The San Francisco Giants had a terribly disapointing season.
On Sunday, the NL West club announced that first baseman Rafael Devers would miss the rest of the season with a core muscle injury.
Devers had a strong offensive year, but many of San Francisco’s top players fell short of expectations in manager Tony Vitello’s first year.
With the Giants out of the postseason race, they may want to protect their ace as the offseason approaches. According to Justice de los Santos of Mercury News, the Giants are considering shutting down right-hander Logan Webb for the season.
“Tony Vitello said that shutting down Logan Webb for the rest of the year would be ‘a conversation at this point.’ Logan Webb said they’ll talk about it,” de los Santos wrote on X.
Webb was named an All-Star for the third consecutive season. He struggled early in the season, a significant reason why his ERA stands at 4.31 in 27 starts.
On Sunday, Webb allowed six earned runs on eight hits in five innings against the San Diego Padres.

Before 2026, Webb had thrown 204.2 innings or more in three straight seasons from 2023-25. He is one of the more durable starters in baseball.
Would it be wise for the Giants to shut Webb down for the year?
They risk losing him to a long-term injury when there’s nothing to play for. However, it seems likely the organization will let him pitch if that’s what he wants to do.
