Sept. 26-27 is Harvest Weekend in Surrey with the launch of Common Ground Farms as a working farm and gathering space in the Hazelmere area.
The former polo grounds and heritage barn are renovated on 100 acres at 17948 8 Ave., where a Harvest Market happens Saturday, Sept. 26, followed by a Long Table Dinner on Sunday, Sept. 27, in partnership with Fraser Valley Wine Collective.
Built in 1991 as a polo clubhouse, the red barn was once the heart of a thriving equestrian property, explains a post on commongroundfarms.ca. “Riders gathered here after long days on the field, guests lingered over conversation, and the land held space for connection in its own quiet way. Decades later, that purpose still feels the same.”
Operated by Emma and Craig Schouten, Common Ground Farms will become a place for weddings, markets, workshops, creative projects, wellness experiences, corporate gatherings and “the kinds of moments people remember for years.”
The Sept. 26 market promises three dozen local vendors, food trucks, beer and wine garden, corn shucking, pumpkin painting, apple bobbing and sack races for kids, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Parking is free.
Tickets are $169 on eventbrite.com for the Harvest Long Table Dinner, held in the renovated barn.
“We’ll gather over locally inspired food and Fraser Valley wine to celebrate the growers, makers, partners and community who have been part of the collaborations, experiences and connections that have brought our region to life throughout the year,” says a webpost.
Manulife Wealth and Gold Key Life are presenting sponsors of the dinner, to include a silent auction benefiting PacificSport Fraser Valley.
Over the past year and a half, Fraser Valley Wine Collective has created elevated hospitality experiences centered around food, wine and bringing community together, says Bobbi-Rhea Mackie, business development director and co-founder of Mackie’s Place in North Surrey.
“This will be our second annual Harvest Weekend,” Mackie says. “Over the past year, we’ve also hosted monthly markets at Chapter Estates Winery and created our Summer Sampler series, bringing together local wineries and beverage producers. At the heart of all of it is a pretty simple philosophy: we’re better together. Part of that means intentionally partnering with great venues and hospitality businesses throughout the Fraser Valley and using our events as an opportunity to introduce people to the places, producers and experiences being created here.”
