I’d rather take fewer things but good quality versions. I’m also quite wary of taking supplements simply because they’re fashionable. More is not necessarily better and they should be supplementing your nutritional intake anyway. The cheap options are often stuffed with fillers, unnecessary additives and sugar too.
The cabbage soup diet? God help me. I’ve certainly seen and tried some ridiculous things over the years. It is probably one of the reasons I feel so strongly now about not approaching food from a place of deprivation. I don’t think about food as being good or bad. I love a good steak and ice-cream. If I’m craving it, I would rather have a really good ice cream and enjoy it. I also like a dirty martini but drink far less than I used to because alcohol gives me terrible anxiety.
My fridge is always stocked with kefir, berries and a lot of vegetables. There will nearly always be greens of some kind as well. I like having food around that makes it very easy to put something decent together without having to think too hard about it. I don’t snack that much but when I do, it’s usually nuts.
For me, connection is a huge part of my overall wellbeing. Seeing friends, laughing, having dinner, getting out of work mode. I’m good at filling every available space with work, so I’ve learnt to create some space where nothing particularly productive is happening.
Mental wellbeing doesn’t have to be complicated. Journalling and breathwork are probably the two practices I come back to most. They’re simple, don’t take long and help me notice when my stress load is getting too high. Sleep, daylight, movement, people you love and enough space in your life to enjoy it all – that’s what matters.
