CONSTRUCTION is underway on the Newton Community Centre, one of the largest capital project investments in the City’s history. Work on the site is advancing, with crews now removing decommissioned infrastructure, carrying out site grading and conducting additional geotechnical testing.
“This project is a gamechanger for Newton,” said Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke on Tuesday. “As Surrey’s largest town centre, Newton deserves a community hub that matches its size, diversity and potential. By bringing recreation, culture and library services together under one roof, we’re creating a vibrant gathering place that will connect residents, support healthy lifestyles and serve generations to come.”
Once completed, the 175,000-square-foot facility will include a 50-metre lap pool, leisure pool, hot tub, sauna, two gymnasiums, fitness centre, multi-purpose and arts spaces, child-care areas and a new 40,000-square-foot library, more than double the size of the existing Newton branch.
The start of construction follows the successful completion of the new Newton Community Centre road, which improves access to the future recreation centre by providing a direct route for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers travelling from King George Boulevard. The road is scheduled to open in the coming weeks.
Located on the east side of King George Boulevard, next to the Newton Seniors Centre, the $310.6-million project supports the City’s long-term vision for a revitalized Newton town centre and is expected to open in spring 2030.
