The province is expanding access to strep throat and ear infection assessments through Saskatchewan pharmacies, with 55 new locations accepted into the program.
Opening up new services
In May, the province announced a new three-year agreement with the Pharmacy Association of Saskatchewan (PAS) to support pharmacy services, including medication dispensing and the diagnosis and treatment of minor ailments.
Souris Family Pharmacy was among the pharmacies able to take part in the expanded services, while also receiving improved provincial reimbursement for some medications.
Strep throat and ear infection services have also been expanded, with pharmacists assessing symptoms, performing rapid testing for strep throat, and determining appropriate treatment options, including prescribing medication. 55 new locations in Saskatchewan have been accepted into the program, with strep throat and ear services being available in 34 communities by January 2027.
“This expansion provides more timely access to assessment and treatment, aligning with our goals under the Patients First Plan,” said Rural and Remote Health Minister Lori Carr. “The strong response to the Strep Throat and Ear Infection Program is encouraging. Through this expansion, pharmacists will play a significant role in enhancing access to quality care for patients as close to home as possible.”
Finding services in your area
During the announcement of the expansion, Carr stated that work is being done on a registry allowing people to look up where the pharmacies that offer these services are located.
“We’re working in collaboration with the Saskatchewan Medical Association on getting something up and running. It’ll take a little while for that to happen, but it will be a welcome tool for individuals.”
Carr stated that, to date, 11,000 people have used services through the program, which helps free up other healthcare providers in the province.
