Mississauga’s biggest community centre is being reimagined and redeveloped in the next several years to “better meet the needs of a growing community,” the city says.
The 142,000-sq.-ft. Mississauga Valley Community Centre and Library, which serves the city’s downtown, is on the books for a major transformation that got underway with a public engagement campaign and community survey this past summer.
Design work is slated to begin next year followed by a second public engagement initiative, which will include community presentations and information sessions, on the schedule for late 2027 or spring 2028, according to the City of Mississauga.
Officials expect design work to be completed in summer 2029 and construction to begin soon thereafter at a time not yet determined.
“Mississauga’s downtown area is a growing community that’s expected to double in size by 2041,” city officials said in an online description of the major project. “To meet the needs of the growing community, existing community spaces will be reimagined, including the redevelopment and repurposing of existing city-owned lands and facilities.”

The community centre and library, located at 1275 Mississauga Valley Blvd., is the city’s largest such facility, officials note, adding it was built in 1977 and renovated in 2004.
The parkland surrounding the community centre is roughly 50 acres in size and owned by the city.
Mississauga officials say the city’s 2024 Future Directions Plan identified Mississauga Valley Community Centre and Library as “a key opportunity to support future growth in the downtown area.”
Continuing, the municipality said, the plan proposes “redeveloping the site into a more urban community centre and using the site more efficiently to help meet the city’s housing priorities.”

The city added it is working with a consultant team to determine the amenities, size and design of the new community centre and library that will service the community and surrounding neighbourhoods.
Construction costs are not yet budgeted.
Currently, the community centre and library offer the following amenities:
Aquatics centre (25-metre, six-lane Terry Fox Pool and Therapy Pool).
Terry Fox Fitness Centre and studio.
Gymnasium.
Indoor arena.
Library and related programming areas.
Licensed spaces.
Lobby, offices, changerooms and auxiliary spaces.
Multipurpose spaces.
Squash courts.
Meanwhile, the Mississauga Aquatic Club has submitted a petition containing dozens of signatures to the city calling for a larger swimming pool to be part of the redeveloped facility.
The petition is on the city council agenda on Wednesday, when aquatic club officials are also expected to make a presentation to councillors.
The club is asking for a 25-metre, 10-lane swimming pool — four lanes wider than the current pool — “to serve as the home base of the Mississauga Aquatic Club and expand access to a high-quality aquatic facility for the entire community.”
