All-candidate meetings happen in Surrey and White Rock ahead of the Oct. 17 civic election.
A Surrey Mayoral Race All-Candidates Forum hosted by Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association is set for Wednesday morning, Sept. 23, at Civic Hotel with an hour-long panel discussion and questions starting at 8:30 a.m.
“Hear directly from Surrey’s Mayoral Candidates as they discuss key issues, respond to moderated questions, and share their vision for the Surrey’s future,” says a post on downtownsurreybia.com. “This complimentary forum requires advance registration, and capacity is limited.”
Surrey & White Rock Board of Trade (SWRBOT) hosts forums in White Rock on Monday, Sept. 21 (for council candidates) and Tuesday, Sept. 22 (mayor), 5:30 p.m. start at White Rock Community Centre.
The business organization’s Surrey-focused forums are Tuesday, Oct. 6 (council) and Wednesday, Oct. 7 (mayor) at Sheraton Vancouver Guildford Hotel, 5:30 p.m.
“These events will bring together candidates, the business community, and residents for meaningful discussions on issues shaping Surrey’s future,” SWRBOT says. To attend as a spectator, register on swrbot.com/events.
Elsewhere, Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce is hosting an “open-house series” for civic slates. The remaining events are Sept. 17 with Surrey First (Mayoral candidate Linda Annis), Sept. 18 (Conservative Party of Surrey, mayoral candidate Honveer Singh Randhawa) and Sept. 21 (New Surrey+, mayoral candidate Igal Ammons II), all from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Chamber office, 5738 176th St. Pre-register on cloverdalechamber.ca.
In cities across B.C., candidate nomination periods ended 4 p.m. Sept. 11, signalling the official start of a civic election campaign involving a long list of people looking for votes over the next few weeks.
Named on surrey.ca/election, seven candidates are running for mayor in Surrey, 67 for city council and 26 for school trustee — exactly 100 for the 15 seats available, and 16 more candidates than 84 on the ballot in the 2022 civic election. The quadrennial election (every four years) sees Surrey voters pick a mayor, eight city councillors and six school trustees.
In White Rock, three candidates are vying for the seat of mayor, 15 for the six councillor seats.
