Dave Meltzer had an update on the situation involving Gisele Shaw, the NWA, and Maple Leaf Pro in this week’s edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
The NWA recently announced that it had signed Shaw to an exclusive contract. Shaw then dropped the MLP Women’s Canadian title to Priscilla Kelly on Wednesday’s edition of MLP Mayhem.
Kelly will now defend the title against Nikki Storm at MLP Northern Rising on October 3 in Toronto.
Meltzer wrote that it had originally been planned for Shaw to hold the title through October, but her new contract with the NWA does not allow her on other television shows. He also addressed the split between Shaw and MLP owner Scott D’Amore in the spring and the timing of Shaw losing the title to Kelly.
Meltzer wrote:
“The NWA announced the signing of Gisele Shaw to what they reported as an exclusive contract. Shaw had been the women’s champion of Maple Leaf Pro and was the girlfriend of owner Scott D’Amore, but they broke up months ago. The timing of this because Shaw has posted photos of her new partner leading to people thinking she signed here and left Maple Leaf Pro over the split.“
“But the timing doesn’t work out since the split was in the spring and D’Amore still booked her strongly as champion and she was part of the TV’s to build her as the top women’s star when they got television recently on TSN.”
Meltzer continued:
“The NWA contract does not allow her on any other television show and they had already taped her losing the title to Priscilla Kelly (which aired this week) before making the deal.”
“There was an original plan for her to at least hold the title through October, but the new deal wouldn’t allow for that so they switched it at recent tapings. But this deal has been in the works for some time before it was announced.”
Shaw actually defended the MLP Women’s Canadian title one week after she had lost it at MLP’s television tapings in Windsor on August 8. She defeated B3CCA at a Greektown Wrestling show in Toronto the following week.
