The Toronto Argonauts have secured a playoff berth, giving Brampton and Peel football fans a postseason team to follow after Saturday’s 24–19 win over Edmonton. Toronto improved to 8–6 at BMO Field, turning a close game into a decisive step in its season.
In the CFL’s September 19 game report, quarterback Chad Kelly finished with 373 passing yards and two touchdowns, completing 19 of 31 attempts. Dymere Miller caught three passes for 90 yards and a touchdown, while Kevin Mital added four receptions for 78 yards and another score.
Toronto remained unbeaten at home at 4–0. Edmonton fell to 10–4 despite 360 passing yards from Cody Fajardo in his 100th career start.
Toronto Argonauts find the decisive defensive score
Ralph Holley’s 55-yard fumble return supplied Toronto’s only points after halftime. The defensive lineman collected a loose ball after a snap went over Fajardo’s head and carried it into the end zone, extending the advantage to 24–16.
Edmonton cut the margin with a fourth-quarter field goal. Tarvarus McFadden’s late interception in the end zone ended the visitors’ final threat and secured the result.
Big passes offset a stalled running game
The league’s statistical breakdown shows how heavily Toronto depended on its passing attack. Kelly completed five passes covering at least 30 yards each, providing the explosive gains that kept Toronto moving.
Those gains included 56 yards to Tyler Kahmann, 48 to David Ungerer III, 51 to Mital and 57 to Miller. They allowed Toronto to move the ball in large chunks despite two interceptions thrown by Kelly.
At the other end, Edmonton reached the red zone six times and produced only one touchdown. Two Fajardo passes were intercepted in the end zone. Toronto’s defence finished with three takeaways, and Holley’s touchdown was the first of his CFL career.
That combination explains the narrow score: Edmonton repeatedly reached threatening positions, while Toronto found enough explosive plays and defensive stops to survive them.
Edmonton’s own game report puts the missed chances in sharper relief: the Elks held the ball for 38 minutes 45 seconds and outgained Toronto 483–354 in net offence. Austin Mack caught seven passes for 116 yards, while Justin Rankin rushed for 89 yards.
A reversal of the first meeting
The result changed the direction of this season’s matchup. Edmonton’s pre-game preview noted a 42–12 Elks victory over Toronto in Week 11. Edmonton had entered Saturday seeking a fifth consecutive win, while the Argonauts had won five of their previous seven.
The Toronto Argonauts now head to Winnipeg on Friday, September 25. The CFL lists that game as the final meeting of their regular-season series, following a 30–21 Blue Bombers win in Week 6. The playoff berth is secured; the next task is improving the finish to the regular season.
