A wounded Smith was alone for more than 2 minutes
There were lots of details at the start of the news conference, particularly about what happened after Ward ambushed Smith.
Rodd said Smith was shot by Ward before he even had the opportunity to get out of his vehicle.
“Despite suffering life-threatening injuries [and] within moments of encountering [Ward], Const. Smith exited his vehicle and engaged [him],” Rodd said.
“[Smith] was shot multiple times and stayed engaged. Approximately two minutes and 47 seconds into the gun exchange, a second Belleville police officer arrived on the scene and immediately moved toward the danger.”
Rodd identified that second officer as Const. Michael McCurdy, who was not injured.
“Without hesitation, Const. McCurdy joined the act of gunfight, helping to bring the violent attack to an end.”
