Wyndham Clark made his feelings clear about his own fans on a subdued opening day at the Presidents Cup…
If it was boisterous Bethpage, this was meagre Medinah.
The atmosphere at the start the Presidents Cup was so flat that Wyndham Clark even decided to call out his own fans by the end of the opening day.
Clark, the US Open champion who had to deal with the crowd jeering against him on his way to his win at Shinnecock this year, is starting to get used to feeling the heat from outside the ropes.
But in Chicago, where Clark and Collin Morikawa defeated Adam Scott and Ryan Fox as the US edged the opening fourball matches, the crowd was decidedly tame. In stark contrast to last year’s Ryder Cup, there was a lively atmosphere on the first tee, but the energy did not carry out onto the sprawling course as the stands emptied before the final match began.
“I felt like the momentum could have been better, to be honest, because we weren’t really feeling the fans, I think, as much as normal,” said Clark.
Wyndham Clark calling out the fans at Medinah: “These guys are going to laugh, but it was kind of dead out there. I felt like the momentum could have been better, to be honest, because we weren’t really feeling the fans, I think, as much as normal.

“There was a few shots – I mean, Collin hit a 5-wood on 11 to 10 feet, and we didn’t even know if it was on the green because no one clapped. It was a little surprising. We’d make some big putts. I’m saying this more as a challenge that hopefully tomorrow and the weekend the fans are out there really rooting us on, and regardless of what happens, we have the momentum.”
US captain Brandt Snedeker admitted it was a “weird” opening day of action.
“I really felt like the fans were out there and they were there, but the first tee was loud, and then it just kind of dissipated as the day went on,” Snedeker said.
“I don’t know why. I think part of it was because the golf course was set up pretty difficult.
“There were some really tough pins out there, so it was really hard to get a lot of birdies going and get guys going crazy, I guess. And there’s some tough viewing out there on some of the holes where people really couldn’t see what was going on.”
