Quebec Finance Minister Eric Girard invoked the cost of Brexit on Thursday to challenge the Parti Québécois’s case for independence, warning separation would damage Quebec’s economy and create “a climate of uncertainty” for businesses.

Nicolas Marceau, a former PQ finance minister and member of the party’s economic team, argued independence would simplify business by eliminating overlapping federal and provincial departments.

“If we want to reduce bureaucracy, it’s hard to find a simpler way than Quebec independence,” he said, adding Quebec would be “the richest country ever born in human history.”
