The dream fight between Great Britain’s two great heavyweight champions of the modern boxing era may be in jeopardy just days after it was announced as the feud between Dana White and Eddie Hearn could upend the bout between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury.
The Joshua-Fury matchup would have been a lot more appetizing several years ago when both fighters were at their peak. Both held world championships at one point and were undefeated deep into their careers. But both were defeated twice by Ukranian champ Oleksandr Usyk. In recent years, Fury has been in and out of retirement while Joshua lowered himself to fighting Jake Paul.
But in spite of never crossing paths due to the complications and ridiculousness of the boxing world, it was finally announced last week that Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury would meet in the ring on December 11 in Cardiff, Wales on Netflix.
But just a couple days after the fight announcement, there are serious questions about whether it will move forward thanks to the bitter feud between promoters Dana White and Eddie Hearn.
While Hearn has followed his father Barry as one of the UK’s top promoters and made his name in boxing, White is attempting to conquer his territory after bringing UFC to global prominence. The two have traded barbs publicly on multiple occasions as White launched Zuffa Boxing.
Just how deep does the feud go? The mere mention of White’s name in the announcement of the Fury-Josha fight is now threatening to have it called off.
The Netflix announcement of the fight states, “H.E. Turki Alalshikh’s The Ring and Dana White will collaborate to promote the event.”
Fury is promoted by Frank Warren and Queensbury. Anthony Joshua is promoted by Eddie Hearn and Matchroom. But the fight was mediated and brought to life by Turki Al-Sheikh, who is partners with White on Zuffa and is the sometimes controversial owner of Ring Magazine.
However, Eddie Hearn has insisted that Dana White cannot be involved with the fight because of their longstanding rivalry. And with his name prominently mentioned in the press release, it set the veteran British promoter off.

“Dana White cannot be involved with this fight promotion,” Hearn said. “Netflix clearly didn’t get the memo. No one talks to each other. So I speak to Sela and Turki, no, Dana White is not involved in the fight. You’ve got a contract that says that. And then Netflix says, ‘Oh yes, the fight is in conjunction with Dana White.’ So now we have to go through that process and deal with it. It’s a little bit annoying to be honest with you.”
Hearn also bragged that he won the battle to put the fight in the UK as the home of both fighters instead of a potentially more lucrative option in the United States.
White fired back at Hearn, suggesting that his protests weren’t going to move Netflix and blowing off his protestations.

“I think the press release speaks for itself. Eddie Hearn must spend 24 hours a day doing interviews. I’ve never seen a guy do more interviews in my life,” White said, somehow without a hint of irony. “You think Netflix gives a sh*t what Eddie Hearn thinks? I’m not involved in the promotion of the fight? I’m sitting hear promoting the fight right now, who’s going to stop me?”
Well, what could stop Dana White is the fight being canceled. And Tyson Fury stepped up to say that could actually happen, calling out both Anthony Joshua and Eddie Hearn for potentially backing out of the megafight.

“Breaking news: Anthony Joshua and Eddie Hearn are trying to pull out of this fight. They’re saying they’re not going to fight now. They’re sh*thouse cowards. It’s mainly to due with Eddie Hearn’s ego and he’s making up a million different things and threatening they’re not going to fight,” Fury said.
“This is mainly to do with Eddie Hearn’s ego. What a little prick. He’s cost us the biggest fight in boxing history. Clown,” Fury added.
What a perfect summation of everything that has taken boxing from one of the biggest sports in the world to something that is now largely seen as an afterthought. At this point, who knows what will happen next. It would be a shame if boxing fans lose out on the fight, but maybe that should be expected given all the competing forces involved. Would these men really risk the tens of millions of dollars that would come with the massive bout over who has the biggest ego? If you think the answer isn’t yes, you don’t know boxing.
