Eight people were taken to hospital — including three children — after three separate vehicle collisions in Winnipeg on Monday afternoon.

A Ford Fusion was struck by a Honda Fit at the intersection of Pembina Highway and Plaza Drive in south Winnipeg around 4:30 p.m. on Monday, city police said in a news release.

Police said the Ford had a green light as it was heading northbound on the highway, when the westbound Honda drove through a red light at the intersection.

The Honda then mounted the sidewalk and hit three young children who were with an adult, the release said.

The children had minor injuries and were taken to hospital in stable condition.

The Honda’s driver and passenger— a woman in her 70s and a man in his 80s, respectively — were taken to hospital in unstable condition, police said. They were later upgraded to stable.

The driver was handed a ticket under the Highway Traffic Act and the traffic division is still investigating.

Anyone who has information or video of the incident is asked to call the traffic unit at 204-986-7085. Anonymous tips can be sent to Crime Stoppers 204-786-TIPS or winnipegcrimestoppers.org.

That same afternoon, a man was pronounced dead after a serious accident at Portage Avenue and Main Street in downtown Winnipeg.

Police said a man in his 70s was taken to hospital in critical condition after the vehicle he was driving went up onto the curb and hit a pole.

The man was pronounced dead in hospital, police said.

Traffic was blocked off at the major intersection between 4:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Two more people were taken to hospital after police responded to a two-vehicle collision on Sterling Lyon Parkway, near the Seasons of Tuxedo shopping area, around 5 p.m. on Monday.

Police said a vehicle that was heading east hit another vehicle that was going west as it turned in front of it. The impact sent the westbound vehicle crashing into a light standard, crushing its roof.

Two people were taken to hospital in critical condition and were later upgraded to stable, police said.

Nearby traffic lights were affected for several hours, the release said.
