A Montreal widow who believed she was helping the RCMP catch corrupt bank employees says scammers kept her on the phone for three days, coached her through bank withdrawals and sent couriers to collect about $20,000 in cash.
Her case, supported by a police witness statement given the day she says she realized she had been swindled, reflects a bank-investigator scam that fraud officials say is costing Canadians tens of millions of dollars — and shows how quickly trust in banks and police can be turned against a victim.
The woman, who is in her 70s, spoke to The Gazette on condition she not be identified because she fears being targeted again.
