BOSTON – The Boston University women’s soccer program is set for its longest true road stretch in 24 years when it visits Maine on Sunday (Aug. 24). Opening kick is set for Noon.
BU (1-1) will travel nearly 6,780 miles from Aug. 24 to Sept. 11, playing in three states. The last road swing that featured five consecutive true road games was in 2001, when the Terriers traveled to Utah, BYU, Boston College, Towson and Delaware. BU did have longer stretches away from home since, but played neutral matches in those spans.
Maine (0-1) will conclude its two-game homestand to open the season. Last year, the Black Bears went unbeaten at Mahaney Diamond with a 6-0-2 record.
Sunday’s game airs on America East TV, which does not require a subscription. Live statistics are also available through Maine Athletics.
TERRIER TIDBITS
BU dropped a 2-1 home contest to Fairfield on Aug. 21.
Senior Helene Tyburczy notched her first collegiate goal in the 66th minute off a corner kick insert from classmate Giulianna Gianino.
Senior Susan Shobeiri also made a career high four saves in the effort.
Tyburczy’s goal was the first from a Terrier defender since 2024 Patriot League Tournament MVP Morgan Weaver’s later strike in last season’s championship game against Bucknell.
Gianino is one of four Patriot League student-athletes with two assists on the year. She is tied for 10th place in program history with 48 career points.
Maine will be the second straight 2024 conference champion BU faces. Fairfield captured the MAAC title, while Maine hoisted the America East crown.
The Terriers’ first three foes all reached their respective conference tournament title games.
SCOUTING MAINE
The Black Bears ignited their campaign with a 2-0 loss to Rhode Island on Aug. 17.
Three of Maine’s next four foes reside in the Patriot League: BU, Army West Point (Aug. 31) and Holy Cross (Sept. 7).
Jordane Pinette, Rebecca Grisdale and Grace Wilson were named to the America East Preseason All-Conference Team.
The Black Bears were projected to finish third in the America East preseason poll, trailing UNH and Binghamton.
SERIES HISTORY
Sunday marks the 25th all-time meeting between BU and Maine in a series that began in 1995.
The Terriers sport a 16-4-4 advantage in the rivalry.
BU has been unbeaten in 12 of the last 13 matchups, but the Black Bears were victors in the last clash, 2-1, on Sept. 7, 2023.
Shayla Brown scored her first career goal in the 43rd minute, but Maine responded with two second-half tallies.
On the road, the Terriers are 6-2-2 against Maine.
