Programs and services for families affected by traumatic wounds received a financial boost at a shredding event held at Semiahmoo Shopping Centre.

Over the course of four hours, the fall edition of the fundraiser, held Sept. 26, raised $6,430 for Surrey Fire Fighters’ Charitable Society.

“This event… supports families in our community with money, medical and health care, school programs and those affected by traumatic wounds or injuries,” a news release explained.

The spring event, held in April, raised just shy of $8,000 – plus 300 pounds of food – for Sources White Rock-South Surrey Food Bank.

Funds are raised through donations for the service, which offers secure destruction of private documents.

In all, six tons of paper was shredded Sept. 26 – saving the equivalent of 36 mature trees, the release adds.

“Special thanks to the Surrey Firefighters Charitable Society volunteers, Shredwise and the Semiahmoo team who all participated in making this another great event!”

The shopping centre began the initiative some 15 years ago. To date, more than $116,00 has been raised.
