History

Victoria, BC – The University of Victoria women’s soccer team captured its first win of the season, defeating the UBC Okanagan Heat 1-0 on Oct. 4 at Centennial Stadium.

Ruby Nicholas converts from the spot for the match-winning goal.

The Vikes started the game with a different level of tenacity, generating offensive pressure that the home crowd had yet to see this season. An early attacking sequence led by Brianne McLeish and Ruby Nicholas earned Victoria a penalty kick in the eighth minute. Nicholas stepped up and confidently converted from the spot to give the Vikes a 1-0 lead as they searched for their first Canada West victory of the year.
The chances kept coming as Scarlett McNeely rattled a point-blank effort off the crossbar, while several other opportunities narrowly missed the target. Victoria’s aggressive approach kept the Heat under pressure throughout the opening half.

The Vikes continued to push for a second goal after the break.

Victoria maintained control of the match and continued to create dangerous opportunities in the attacking third. By the 60th minute, the Vikes held a commanding 17-2 advantage in shots, with a high percentage on target.
UBCO’s goalkeeper helped keep the game within reach, turning aside several quality chances. Nicholas, McLeish, and McNeely were all denied by the woodwork as the Vikes continued their relentless search for a second goal.
The Vikes’ defence was equally impressive, limiting the Heat to just two shots over the full 90 minutes and securing the team’s first clean sheet victory of the season.
