Young people in Cowansville have a new place to play following the inauguration of a multisport mini-pitch built through a partnership between the Fondation Impact de Montréal and the city.
CF Montréal first-team players joined municipal representatives and students from Massey-Vanier’s soccer study-sport program for the opening, according to a city announcement published Oct. 1.
Coaches from the club’s soccer schools led a sports clinic for local youth. Participants then had the chance to play friendly matches alongside first-team players.
The project comes during Cowansville’s 150th anniversary year. Acting mayor and municipal councillor Stéphane Lussier described the facility as a lasting contribution to the community.
“In this year of the city’s 150th anniversary, this project represents an important legacy for residents,” Lussier said in the announcement, translated from French. “It contributes to our community’s quality of life while encouraging physical activity.”
Lussier also thanked the foundation for choosing Cowansville and the municipal teams that helped carry out the project.
The foundation handled the mini-pitch’s design and installation, while the city completed the preparatory work needed to accommodate it.
Measuring 36 metres by 18 metres, the facility has a modular galvanized-steel structure designed for safety and durability.
It includes two certified goals with secure anchors, benches and an integrated lighting system.
The announcement describes the mini-pitch as a safe, accessible space where young people can take part in physical activity.
Foundation president Carmie Saputo said the project reflects the organization’s aim of creating places that bring young people together and improve access to sport.
“Through this project, we hope to leave a lasting legacy in the Cowansville community and offer a space where the next generation can learn, thrive and reach its full potential through sport,” Saputo said.
Cowansville’s mini-pitch is the fourth inaugurated during the second phase of the foundation’s multisport mini-pitch program, which calls for 10 new installations in communities across Quebec.
It follows facilities in Les Coteaux, Val-des-Bois and Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts.
The foundation says the program aims to expand access to sport, encourage healthy habits and support young people in communities where sports infrastructure is limited or unavailable.
Founded in 2013, the Fondation Impact de Montréal organizes and supports activities intended to improve the quality of life of children and families from vulnerable backgrounds. Providing sports facilities is part of its work to promote physical activity and social inclusion.
