You can’t hurry love when it comes to Phil Collins and Paul McCartney.

But they can bury the hatchet, even though it took more than two decades.
What caused the falling out?
Collins, 75, shared an update on their longstanding rift after McCartney, 84, made a remark about the In the Air Tonight singer at the 2002 Queen’s Jubilee Concert.
“We had a rehearsal at Buckingham Palace and I had a first edition Hunter Davies book (on The Beatles), which was quite rare,” Collins explained to Morgan.
“I took it to the rehearsal so Paul could sign it,” he recounted, noting how Paul approached him with his then-wife Heather Mills.
McCartney proceeded to sign the book but then made a comment to Mills that got under Collins’ skin.
“He probably didn’t mean it like it sounded, but he said, ‘He’s a big Beatle fan, is our little Phil,’” the Genesis frontman recalled.
“And I thought, ‘You a**hole.’ I couldn’t help it. That’s just what I thought.”
A misunderstanding?
Collins acknowledged that he “probably made more” of McCartney’s statement than it meant, but admitted it still rubbed him the wrong way.
“I knew Paul. This wasn’t the first time I met him. I played on one of his albums. I played live with him with the Prince’s Trust. I’d given him an award at an award show in London, so I kind of knew him. So I was kind of surprised at that particular tone of reply,” he told Morgan.
Collins even detailed the exchange in his 2016 memoir, Not Dead Yet, and while promoting the book, he revealed that the Maybe I’m Amazed singer reached out via email to squash their beef, but Sussudio singer said at the time that he didn’t reply.

It wasn’t until earlier this year that the two legends reconciled.
Collins revealed that McCartney reached out to him after learning the Against All Odds crooner was collecting music memorabilia donations as part of a charity auction for the King’s Trust.
“He said, ‘While we’re on the phone.’ I thought, ‘Oh, here we go,’” Collins told Morgan.
“So he said, ‘What is all this about?’ I said, ‘I wish I’d never said it, Paul. I wish I’d never said it.’ He said, ‘I thought we were good, you know.’”
While Collins didn’t get more specific than that, he did say that the two “kissed and made up” in the end.

Reigniting the feud?
“I said I was sorry, because I really didn’t wish him …” Collins trailed off before subtly shading Macca.
“I mean, obviously, this had been bugging him because he likes to be liked, as we all do! Maybe him more than some other people. But we all like to be liked. I understand that.”
It’s not the first time Collins has shared the two putting the past behind them.
“We’ve made up,” Collins told the Sunday Times in August.
“He’s happy about the fact that we discussed it. And I’m happy we discussed it, so it was just really lovely that it’s gone full circle now.”
Full circle, indeed.
