Zuffa Boxing/Top Rank└Floyd Mayweather and Ryan Garcia [right] are supposedly in talks for a showdown
Ryan Garcia has responded to reports that he is in talks for a fight with 49-year-old Floyd Mayweather by insisting it would have to be a licensed bout for it to go ahead.
Mayweather, 50-0 (27 KOs), retired following a somewhat farcical victory over the 0-1 Conor McGregor in 2017 but has competed in several exhibitions since.

The proposed matchup, yet another example of boxing being too reliant on yesterday’s heroes to generate crossover interest, was first reported by Fight Hype.
Garcia is one of a handful of active fighters capable of drawing serious audiences to the sport. Even so, he is nowhere near as ‘big’ as Mayweather once was.
Those heady days for “Money” were a long time ago, however.
One of the highest-paid athletes in history, and the highest-paid boxer of all time, Mayweather amassed an estimated fortune of $1.16 billion during his glittering career.
Recent reports, however, have suggested it has all but run dry.
It remains to be seen whether Mayweather would risk his precious unbeaten record against a 28-year-old who is seemingly at the peak of his powers. Furthermore, it has been 11 years since he last fought at welterweight, where Garcia holds the WBC belt.
“Okay Floyd let’s see how much you love that zero,” Garcia posted on X in reference to Mayweather’s unbeaten record.
“And no I wouldn’t do an exhibition, I want his record on the fucking line.
“How much does he actually think he has got left? I’m ready Floyd, remember you made this call.
“I’m just returning the favor. Offer is on the table. Accept or not, if not I move forward as I have been.”
Mayweather’s alleged financial troubles resulted in a lawsuit being filed against him by CSI Sports Events after he attempted to move forward with fights against Manny Pacquiao and Mike Tyson.
The dispute also led to a proposed exhibition with kickboxer Mike Zambidis being cancelled just days before it was due to take place in Greece.
