Bayside has been around since the 1970s.
After nearly 50 years overlooking the busy intersection at Davie and Denman and English Bay beyond, the Bayside Lounge is closing.
The closure was announced on social media.
“After 47 years, it’s with heavy hearts that we have to share that Bayside Lounge will close its doors at the end of the month,” reads a post from the lounge and restaurant. “It honestly doesn’t feel real.”
The self-described “retro cocktail lounge” sits in the Best Western Hotel (a.k.a. Sands), a floor above street level, utilizing the recognizable round corner of the building at 1755 Davie St. for panoramic views of the bustling city below.
The post goes on to thank the many folks who stopped by over the years.
“We know this news will be deeply felt by our entire Bayside family,” it reads. “Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing memories, celebrating our people and welcoming you back to enjoy Bayside together.”
The reaction on social media has been one of shock, with many disappointed by the news.
“This is the worst thing to ever happen to the westend. The entire community is heartbroken,” writes Amy Caswell on Instagram.
“I’m truly heartbroken about Bayside closing,” writes Laryssa Tavares on Instagram. “Bayside meant so much to me. It was my first job in Canada, where I developed my English, made friends, met hundreds of people, grew personally and professionally, and created memories I’ll carry with me forever.”
“Got engaged there in 1986 and went for our divorce drinks in 2013!” writes Mindy Bahia-Sumel on Facebook.
