Some familiar songs will fill a Winnipeg Church on Saturday night.
Grant Church will be hosting a throwback worship night called Courses Reimagined. “This is the sixth throwback worship night,” Cassandra Gingerich, Grant Church Worship Minister, says.
“This time, we’re doing Courses Reimagined from the 1970s and 80s. Come prepared to sing some songs from that era.”
What to expect
Gingerich says participants can expect to sing a mix of upbeat songs, while also having songs in a more stripped-back way.
“We start out with upbeat songs with a full band: “Lord I Lift Your Name on High,” “You Are My All in All,” “I Will Call Upon the Lord,” and “Awesome God.”
“Around the middle of the set, we are actually changing things up a little bit. One of our team members has arranged some of the songs of that era with strings. So we’re going to pair down the band and we’re going to have violin, cello, keys, bass, and a little bit of electric as well.”
Gingerich says that will include songs like “I Love You Lord,” “There Is None Like You,” “Your Shield About Me,” and “Give Thanks.”
More than music
“It’s going to be a more contemplative time of worship. We’re going to have some time for journaling and prayer. Then we’ll go back to some fun songs like “I Exalt Thee,” and “Shine Jesus Shine.”
Getting to sing songs from the past has always been special for Gingerich. “There is something so unique about going back in time and singing the songs that we grew up with. There is something pretty powerful about worship. It has a unique way of stirring our memory and our emotions can be tied to certain songs.
“The Lord has designed us to respond to music and it helps break through some apathy or hardness of heart sometimes and it just helps us to engage. There’s something pretty powerful about going back to songs that made an impact in our life and maybe it will draw us to a time where we got to know Christ for the first time or maybe a struggle.”

Seeing God’s faithfulness
Through all of the moments in the past, Gingerich says God remains faithful. “All those times can come back, and we can remember how good and faithful the Lord has been since those times. Then bring Him into today and realize that He is still faithful and He is still good and He is still kind.”
Open to all
Gingerich says the throwback worship night is for everyone.
“The entire City of Winnipeg and beyond the borders of Winnipeg as well. Grant just happens to be the church where we are going to sing, but it is welcome for anyone who wants to attend.
“I know it’s Thanksgiving weekend, so I know that it’s busy in family lives, but if you make this a part, I think it will just be a rich time of Thanksgiving.”
The Throwback Worship Night is at Grant Church, 877 Wilkes Avenue in Winnipeg on Saturday, October 10, beginning at 7 p.m.
