What happens when two provinces with very different political cultures question their place in Canada?

To explore the question further, The Gazette is collaborating with our editorial counterpart on the subject, the Calgary Herald.

Below you’ll find columnists from each publication who, from their vantage point, discuss the history of the separatist sentiment in Canada. As Quebecers, we know we’ve had the more longstanding relationship with sovereignty, but Alberta is quickly catching up — even holding a vote on Oct. 19 on whether to begin the process toward a future binding separation referendum.

It’s important to note that the editorial stance of both our papers is opposed to separation. Our newsrooms, like most Quebecers and Albertans, believe we are better served within Canada. That said, there’s no denying that popular governments in both our provinces are putting referendums on the table and as such we need to inform, discuss and report on the significant political movement.
