Do you know a person or team worthy of Surrey Sports Hall of Fame?
Nominations are now open for six categories and one award of the Hall, launched in 2026 with the induction of eight individuals and two teams.
“Help us honour the athletes, coaches, builders and others who have made a lasting impact on Surrey’s sports community,” says a post on surrey.ca, where nominations are accepted until Dec. 31.
The six award categories are Athlete, High Performance Athlete, Team, Game Changer, Builder and Coach, plus a Community Hero Award.
Those who nominate should be prepared to send sports achievements of a nominee, community contributions, quality of character, supporting documents, letters of recommendation and more, on surrey.ca/sportshall. Questions can be emailed to sportshall@surrey.ca or call 604-592-6946.
Nominations are valid for three years, and a class of inductees will be celebrated each June.
Earlier this year, on June 2, the first 10 members of Surrey’s new Sports Hall of Fame were celebrated during a ceremony at Surrey City Hall.
Inducted were wrestler John “Earthquake” Tenta, Whalley Little League builder Orest Springenatic, BC Lions football player Terry Bailey, wheelchair tennis trailblazer Sarah Hunter, track athlete/coach Harold Morioka, weightlifter Prabdeep Sanghera, multi-sport builder Cyril William Greenwell, rugby coach Adam Roberts, the Surrey Marlins women’s soccer team of 1990-1993 and the BC Tigers Hurricanes men’s soccer team of 2018.
A display at the Museum of Surrey showcases inductees, while long-range plans are to create a permanent home for the Sports Hall of Fame at City Centre Arena, where a groundbreaking event was attended by singer Michael Bublé and others Sept. 10.
