My Year of Rest and Relaxation? More like our year of tech and reexamination. Between The Social Reckoning, Musk, You Can See Everything, and Artificial, it feels like 2026 is the year we’re finally coming to grips with the fact that Big Computer is maybe not leading us down the path to enlightenment. Rounding out our keyboard consternation is Netflix’s forthcoming series The Altruists, based on New York’s reporting on the rise and fall of Sam Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison’s crypto company FTX. Anthony Boyle and Julia Garner star as the lovers turned co-founders, the duo who set out to use crypto for good, kind of, but also for profit, kind of, in a business venture–slash–possible fraud that turned the whole world upside down.

The Altruists looks a little less doom and gloom than some of its ripped-from-the-headlines tech brethren and a little more fun in the sun, if only because FTX was briefly headquartered the Bahamas, and who doesn’t love a walk on the beach? Created by Graham Moore and co–executive produced by Jacqueline Hoyt, The Altruists plays up that Bonnie and Clyde–esque romance between Ellison and Bankman-Fried in its first trailer, long before they went on the run with millions and millions of other people’s money. While Boyle’s Bankman-Fried seems a little more grounded than his real-life counterpart, Garner’s high-wire swing as Ellison is mesmerizing — her kookiest turn yet in a career of big swings. All episodes premiere on Netflix on November 19.
