Vancouver FC defender Mateo Campagna was optimistic going into Saturday’s game against Supra du Québec.

Supra was breathing down the Eagles’ neck, looking to take the fourth spot in regular season CPL standings, and the last available playoff spot, away from VFC.

“The last time we were fighting for a playoff spot at the end of the season was in 2024, and it didn’t go very well,” Campagna recalled.

“But yes, you can feel that this is our year to make it. It’s a goal for the club and for the team. Everyone is excited. Everyone is focused.”

Campagna certainly was, turning what could have been a 2-1 loss into a 2-2 tie with a goal off a kick by Eagles goaltender Callum Irving late in the game at Stade Boréale in Laval, keeping Vancouver FC in fourth while Supra remains in fifth.

It was the third match in a week for the Quebec team, while the Eagles had gone two weeks without game, coach Martin Nash noted in a pregame interview.

“[After a layoff] it can be difficult for us to find our rhythm at the beginning,” Nash observed.

Supra’s Loïc Kwemi struck first, creating a 1-0 lead that lasted until VFC’s Terran Campbell scored early in the second.

Late in the game, Supra regained the lead courtesy of a goal from midfielder Safwane Mlah, only to see Campagna score a few minutes later.

There are more games to come.

On Friday, Oct. Eagles final home game of the regular season is against Halifax on Oct 16 at 7 p.m. at the Langley stadium. Vancouver have a poor record against the Wanderers this year, losing all three meetings 1-0.
