ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Four players from the Navy men’s tennis team advanced to the second round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic Regional Championship held this week in Blacksburg, Va.
Jake Young, Tommy Kim and George Cutone each won a pair of qualifying draw matches to earn spots in the 64-player main draw.
Young posted a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory over Damian Sancilio from James Madison in the first round of the main draw before he lost a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 decision to Patrik Petera from VCU in the second round.
Kim recorded a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 first-round win over George Mason’s Ekansh Kumar then fell, 7-5, 6-2, to Richmond’s Paxton Pritchard in round two.
Cutone battled his way past Virginia Tech’s Thomas Vesantera Brandao, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, in the first round before he dropped a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 match to Angel Veliz of Liberty in the round of 32.
Charlie Spencer had received a berth in the main draw heading into the event, and he won a 6-2, 6-3 win over Owen Guitswite of Liberty in the first round. Virginia Tech’s Patrik Jurina defeated Spencer, 6-4, 6-4, in the second round.
While part of the team was in Blacksburg, the remainder was in Annapolis competing in the Navy Gold Invite that also included players from Lehigh, Loyola, Howard and Mount St. Mary’s.
Reed Smith earned a trio of singles victories on the weekend, with Jason Kim and Lachlan Buckingham each winning a pair of matches.
Smith and Jason Kim also combined to win three matches as a doubles team. Two other tandems –– Somei Ogata and Zach Quattro, Ethan Garcia and James Thomson –– each won a pair of matches.
Navy will next compete Oct. 23-25 at the Patriot League Conference Masters in West Point.
