A great granddaughter of one of Maple Ridge’s early pioneers has launched a new book about her family and the golf course they founded.

Lorna Seppala, the great granddaughter of John McIver, launched “The McIvers and the History of the Maple Ridge Golf Course”, which tells the story of the how the McIver’s homestead was converted into the historic golf course at 20818 Golf Ln.

The municipality of Maple Ridge was incorporated in the McIver farmhouse in 1874, and the first council meeting was also held there.

The family farm was later converted into a golf course in 1925, which remained connected to the McIver family until the property was sold to the municipality in 1971, with a promise the land would remain a community golf course for the residents of the city.

Recently, the city announced plans to get rid of the golf course and build a controversial 40-acre, multi-use community park on the golf course grounds.

Phase One would include stadium-style baseball fields, with future amenities such as walking trails, multi-sport and pickleball courts, play features, and gathering spaces.

Maple Ridge residents will have the opportunity to on the project and two other recreation projects, with a combined cost of $393 million, a the municipal election on Saturday, Oct. 17.
