A woman has filed a $1.2-million lawsuit against the English Montreal School Board for damages from being groomed and sexually abused after her former teacher was found guilty of sexual exploitation.

Elie Amram, 44, used his position of authority to sexually exploit a 16-year-old in 2011, Judge Éric de Champlain ruled at the Montreal courthouse on Nov. 18, 2025. During a sentencing hearing last week, the judge heard a joint recommendation of 42 months prison time from the Crown prosecutor and the defence lawyer.

The victim, whose name is under a publication ban, filed the civil suit against the EMSB in June, arguing the lack of supervision of staff and facilities by the school board allowed Amram to abuse her repeatedly.
