A free basketball camp is coming to Brampton during March Break, giving 100 young people from families facing financial barriers a chance to develop their skills and experience an NBA-style camp.

The City of Brampton is partnering with the Superfan Nav Bhatia Foundation and Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities to bring its THE BIG BREAK program to the city for the first time in March 2027.

The camp will take place at the Brampton Soccer Centre and combine basketball skills training and mentorship with lessons in teamwork, confidence and sportsmanship.

Participants will also get an NBA-style experience, including custom uniforms, player introductions, daily giveaways and opportunities to meet basketball personalities.

Registration details are expected to be announced later this fall.

Nav Bhatia, the longtime Toronto Raptors superfan and founder of the foundation, said the program is intended to give children access to basketball opportunities they might otherwise miss because of the cost.

“THE BIG BREAK is about giving kids a place to play, learn, dream and, most importantly, belong,” Bhatia said.

The initiative is part of Brampton’s efforts to expand access to sports and recreation for young people as the city continues to invest in facilities and programming.

“Brampton is a city that loves basketball and we are thrilled to welcome Nav Bhatia and THE BIG BREAK camp to our community,” Mayor Patrick Brown said.

“This partnership is about giving our young people an unforgettable opportunity to get on the court, build their skills and be inspired through sport, all at no cost to families.”

The city says it will continue working with the foundation and Jumpstart to deliver the camp and explore opportunities to improve basketball amenities across Brampton.

Other recent recreation initiatives include the Century Gardens Youth Hub, which will include an outdoor basketball half-court, and the Embleton Community Centre, a multi-use recreation destination in southwest Brampton that includes a youth lounge.

The city has also expanded sports facilities with new indoor tennis courts planned at Gore Meadows East Community Park and Brampton’s first dedicated year-round cricket facility at Earnscliffe Park.

For families interested in the basketball camp, registration information is expected later this fall. More information about city recreation programs is available at brampton.ca/recreation.
