Police uncovered a stash of firearms, ammunition and other items on Canada’s East Coast following the seizure of a gun silencer at a mail processing facility in Mississauga.

Canada Border Services Agency officers also arrested a Yarmouth, Nova Scotia man in connection with their investigation, which began after CBSA officers at the International Mail Processing Centre on Dixie Road, near Toronto Pearson Airport, intercepted the “prohibited firearm suppressor.”

The gun part was destined for a Yarmouth residential address, the federal law enforcement agency said on Thursday. The CBSA in Mississauga then handed off the investigation to their colleagues in Halifax.

As their investigation continued, CBSA officers, with help from members of the agency’s intelligence squad and the RCMP, executed a search warrant at the Yarmouth home on Feb. 25, 2026.

“During the search of the residence, officers located and seized multiple unsecured firearms, as well as a homemade suppressor and many rounds of ammunition,” the Canada Border Services Agency said this week.

A man was also arrested at the home, police added.

During their search, officers seized:

13 long guns
four shotguns
two handguns
three Possession and Acquisition Licence cards
one cellphone
firearm ammunition
17 firearms magazines
one prohibited knife
one homemade firearm suppressor
two firearm barrels

The RCMP’s National Weapons Enforcement Support Team provided “expert analysis on the firearms and devices that were seized,” the CBSA said.

Ian Pierre Surette, 25, of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, faces 16 charges related to smuggling and various firearms-related offences, police said. The charges were laid on July 23.

The accused was released on conditions to not possess firearms, prohibited weapons or ammunition. He’s scheduled to appear in court again on Oct. 26.

Dominic Mallette, the CBSA’s regional director general for the Atlantic Region, said Canada Border Services Agency officers are “Canada’s first line of defence against the illegal smuggling of prohibited firearms, weapons and devices into Canada. Working with partners, they are safeguarding our borders and our communities.”
