Eastbourne Park in Brampton will be renamed.

A Brampton park is being renamed to honour two brothers who helped establish the city’s first mosque and spent decades building the local Muslim community.

Eastbourne Park will officially become Kalair Family Park during a ceremony on Friday, Oct. 16, recognizing the contributions of the late Muhammad Nawaz Kalair and Muhammad Aslam Kalair, who immigrated to Canada from Pakistan in 1967.

The brothers helped establish Jami Makki Masjid in 1977, which became Brampton’s first mosque, along with the Makki Masjid School, which now serves approximately 300 students.

The park, located at 764 Balmoral Dr. beside Jami Makki Masjid, is being renamed following a motion approved by Brampton City council in August.

The City of Brampton says the renaming recognizes the family’s legacy of faith, education, service and community building. The city is marking Islamic History Month throughout October with events celebrating Muslim history and contributions to the community.

“Islamic History Month is an opportunity to recognize the history, traditions and people who have helped shape Brampton for generations,” Mayor Patrick Brown said in a city statement.

“We are proud to honour the Kalair family this year and the legacy of Muhammad Nawaz Kalair and Muhammad Aslam Kalair, whose faith, leadership and service helped lay important foundations for Brampton’s Muslim community.”

Muhammad Aslam Kalair, who died on July 25, 2026, at the age of 83, served as chairman and school principal of Jami Makki Masjid until his death. He was also appointed leader of Greater Toronto Tabligh and Dawa, an organization focused on religious outreach and personal spiritual development.

The extended Kalair family now includes hundreds of members, with careers spanning medicine, engineering, science, business and law.
