OnePlus and realme published their ColorOS 17 schedules on October 13, a few hours after Oppo took its Android 17 software global, and the first stable builds start reaching the OnePlus 15, the OnePlus Pad 4 and the realme GT 8 Pro on October 29. For owners of both brands this is the first major Android update that arrives without OxygenOS or realme UI on top, since both companies confirmed in July that eligible devices would move to Oppo’s ColorOS as part of a restructuring that also took OnePlus out of Europe and North America.

The two schedules look alike at the top, but they are shaped very differently underneath, because OnePlus starts 11 of its 24 listed devices before the end of November while realme leaves 31 of its 49 listed devices for December or later. Memeburn also lined the global dates up against the China schedule Oppo published in September, and the comparison shows this year’s flagships trailing their Chinese counterparts by two to three weeks, a gap that all but closes for older phones.

OnePlus lists 24 devices, and 11 of them, or about 46%, start updating in October or November, a group that covers every flagship from the OnePlus 12 onwards along with the Nord 6, the Nord CE6 and two tablets. Realme’s list is twice as long at 49 entries, yet only 18 of them, roughly 37%, start before December, while the December window alone carries 23 realme phones, which makes it the largest single batch in either schedule.

The OnePlus order also contains a few placements that owners are likely to notice. The OnePlus Open, the company’s only foldable, waits until November behind the cheaper 15R and the 13s, the OnePlus 12R lands in December a month after the OnePlus 12, and the Nord CE6 Lite trails the Nord CE6 by the same margin. For the OnePlus 11, which launched in February 2023 with Android 13 and a promise of four major Android versions, the December build is the last upgrade that promise covers, according to MySmartPrice’s report on the original commitment.

OnePlus also says builds go out in batches across regions and that carrier-locked models follow their own network certification timelines, according to Android Authority, so a phone bought through a carrier can trail the dates above by some margin.

How Far Does the Global ColorOS 17 Rollout Trail China?

Oppo’s China roadmap, published in September, started the same flagships considerably earlier, according to Nokiamob’s copy of the schedule, and placing the two calendars side by side produces the gaps below.

DeviceChina startGlobal startGapOnePlus 15October 8October 2921 daysRealme GT 8 ProOctober 8October 2921 daysOnePlus 13October 16October 3014 daysRealme GT 7 ProOctober 16October 3014 daysOnePlus 12November 26NovemberSame monthOnePlus 11December 26DecemberSame month

Because the global schedule gives older phones a month rather than a date, the OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 11 could in principle start abroad before they do in China, which means the familiar assumption that international firmware runs a few weeks behind holds for this year’s flagships but not reliably for older models. Memeburn’s reading is that a Chinese build is a useful early signal for OnePlus 15 and GT 8 Pro owners, whereas owners of older phones gain little by watching the China calendar.

Do OnePlus Owners Have to Switch From OxygenOS?

OnePlus said in July that owners of eligible devices “will have the option to voluntarily update” to ColorOS and that anyone who switches will be able to roll back to OxygenOS, according to 9to5Google, while older models outside the Android 17 scope stay on OxygenOS with maintenance-level support.

What OnePlus has not published is which OxygenOS build a phone returns to, how long the rollback option stays open, or how long a phone that declines ColorOS 17 keeps receiving security patches on OxygenOS 16, and Android Authority noted that no further detail has followed the July statement. Owners who depend on OnePlus-specific features may reasonably prefer to wait for the first maintenance release rather than accept the October build on day one, since the rollback path is still a promise without a published procedure.

What ColorOS 17 Changes Once It Arrives

Oppo frames ColorOS 17 largely around efficiency, and the figures it gives, according to GSMArena’s breakdown of the global launch, include a 25% lower rendering load and 30% lower RAM use from a new Unified Rendering Architecture, 25% more apps kept in the background, Gallery thumbnails that load 50% faster from a cold start and a 55% improvement in app launch stability. None of these numbers has been independently tested yet, so they are best read as Oppo’s targets rather than measured gains.

On the AI side, ColorOS 17 adds an agent mode to AI Mind Pilot that can sort, rename and group photos and files by content and date, along with AI Call Guard, which Oppo says detects AI face swaps and synthetic voices on the device itself. For most OnePlus owners the visual change should be modest, because OxygenOS has been built on the same codebase as ColorOS since the two were merged in 2021, which leaves branding and a handful of OnePlus-specific touches as the main things that disappear.\
