A Southern California resident unexpectedly got a front-row seat to a bear boxing match earlier this month. Homeowner R. Tartaglia has lived in the La Cañada area for over a decade, but even she said she’s never seen anything like this before.
She recorded footage of the playful black bear climbing around her patio and, surprisingly, using a punching bag like a martial arts professional. The curious bear threw punches, practiced body slams, and even climbed onto a railing for a different attack angle.
If this California bear were in the boxing ring, they would win every match! With their intimidating size, massive claws, and natural talent for martial arts, they would give no opponent a chance.
“I was waiting for the bear to grasp the entire bag and start swinging from it,” commenter @virgee77 admitted. “It’s nice to see humans letting nature enjoy the perks of being disturbed by the human race invading their homes for once.”
Many viewers agreed that, despite bears losing more and more of their habitat to people, silly moments like this offer a glimmer of hope. One person who saw the viral video on @ktla5news even suggested naming the bear Rocky, after the most famous fictional boxer of all time!
As Tartaglia explained to KTLA, she has seen this curious bear, whom she believes is a female, playing with the punching bag multiple times before she had a chance to catch it on video.
Black Bears In Southern California
Although bears roam the hills and mountains around much of Southern California, they aren’t native to the area. According to PBS SoCal, “all descend from 27 specimens captured in Yosemite National Park and released in the San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountains in 1933.”

Tartaglia believes increased bear activity around Southern California this year is due to a “crazy bear baby boom.” Her neighbor also has a regular bruin visitor who likes to splash and frolick in the koi pond, surely scaring the poor fish in the process.

This bear’s boxing skills may be cute and funny, but it’s also an important reminder that awareness and bear safety knowledge are essential when living in bear country. Don’t leave food or garbage in vehicles, for example, and throw away trash in bear-proof containers. You never know when an ursine neighbor could be close by!
