OTTAWA, Kan. – After honoring six student-athletes during pregame festivities, Ottawa kept its preseason hopes alive with a 7-0 win over Bethany College on Sunday afternoon. Charlotte Gatehouse picked up a hat trick for the Braves and was joined by four other goalscorers in the win.

During the first 10 minutes of the match, Ottawa battled timing issues on its forward runs, getting whistled for offside four times before settling into a better possession game.

The Braves were able to finally open the scoring in the 15th minute, this time through a build up on the left wing. A solid combination sprung Cennet Donahue to the endline, where she beat a Bethany defender to the inside. Her cross was initially headed off the crossbar by Melissa Grohmann but Gatehouse was on the spot to clean up the loose ball for her sixth goal of the season.

Ottawa kept up the pressure and was rewarded with a pair of goals separated by just 51 seconds in the 25th minute. The first came as Rylee Ringer earned a throw in for the Braves deep in Bethany territory. Taking the throw herself, she stepped into it and found Gatehouse at the top of the 18-yard box. A quick turn and pass to Ellie Fitzpatrick put OU up 2-0.

Grohmann again assisted Gatehouse for Ottawa’s third goal, this time with a well-timed pass through the back line of the Swedes, with Gatehouse finishing near post.

Donahue hit for her second of the season on the stroke of the half-hour mark to put the Braves up 4-0 and shepherd in the first of two goalkeeper changes in the contest for OU.

Bethel looked as if it might find a chance in the 32nd minute, but Lillian Maynard’s decision-making and confidence belied her lack of experience to date, as she raced nearly 40 yards off her endline to collect a hopeful long ball and deftly played it square to her midfield.

She also collected one of two saves in the match for Ottawa, parrying a 53rd-minute effort by Mariah Ibanez wide right.

The Braves return to Dick Peters Sports Complex on Wednesday, hosting Southwestern College. Kickoff for the match is set for 1 p.m.
