Thousands of Unifor members are to vote this weekend on whether to give the union a strike mandate as bargaining with automaker Stellantis NV remains at an impasse over the future of the company’s idled Brampton plant.

The result of the vote will be made public on Oct. 19. Here’s what it could mean for the now-protracted negotiations between the union and the automaker behind brands such as Dodge, Jeep and Peugeot.

Why are negotiations at an impasse?

Contract talks between Unifor, which represents more than 9,000 Stellantis workers, and the company broke down on Sept. 11 after the union said it was informed the automaker had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to sell its Brampton plant to armoured-vehicle maker Roshel Inc. Unifor opposes such a sale.
