As politicians on the campaign trail promise a new hospital for Surrey, Google reviews of the current one on King George Boulevard are not glowing.
Research by the company SEO Backlinks says Surrey Memorial Hospital, love or hate it, is rated lowest among B.C. hospitals and third-worst in all of Canada.
Stats are based on Google Maps listings for Canadian hospitals and emergency departments on Oct. 5, 2026.
Included in the study were 177 hospitals and health centres with an emergency department and at least 200 Google reviews, 135,074 reviews in all, a news release says.
Surrey Memorial Hospital averages 2.19 stars from 2,052 reviews, and only Brampton Civic Hospital and Lakeridge Health Ajax Pickering Hospital in Ontario score lower in Canada, according to the research.
One reviewer of Surrey Memorial Hospital wrote in September: “The emergency department wait times can be absolutely exhausting.”
Another said that month: “Probably the worst run hospital I’ve ever been to in my life.”
Oliver Weston, SEO Backlinks founder said a hospital’s Google rating is one of the first things people see when they search for the nearest emergency department, so it shapes how they feel before they’ve even walked in.
“Nobody should put off getting help because of a star rating. If it’s an emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest hospital,” Weston says. “But the reviews are worth reading because they show where the pressure is. At the bottom of this list, the complaint that comes up again and again is the wait, people sitting for 10 or 15 hours before they see a doctor. Even some of the angriest reviews go out of their way to say the staff were kind. To me, the scores say more about how stretched these hospitals are than about the people working in them.”
Dedicated children’s hospitals, specialist institutes, urgent care centres and hospitals without an emergency department were not included in the research. Reviews cover each hospital as a whole, not only its emergency department.
