You can experience a slice of Indigenous culture this weekend in Brampton with the return of the city’s Traditional Pow Wow.

Now in its second year, the Pow Wow is a free, family-friendly event to bring Brampton’s Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities together in the spirit of learning, respect and reconciliation.

Presented by the city and Algoma University, Brampton residents are invited on Saturday to experience Indigenous culture and traditions through traditional drumming, dancing and food.

“The traditional gathering will feature Pow Wow drums, traditional dancing, craft and food market vendors, with Host Drum Young Tribe, Co-Host Drum Snake Island and invited drums Eagle Flight Singers, Burning Plains and OldStyle Singers,” the city says of the second-annual Pow Wow.

The event runs on Saturday (Oct. 24) at the Brampton Soccer Centre starting at 1 p.m. with a smudging ceremony, followed by opening remarks and dance specials.

For first-timers or non-Indigenous guests, there are a few things to know before Saturday’s Pow Wow.

“Out of respect, do not touch dancers’ regalia, hair or drums,” reads a notice on Pow Wow etiquette, adding that “a dancer’s regalia is not a costume, it is how they dress their spirit.”

If you see a dropped eagle feather, leave it and inform the Master of Ceremonies or Arena Director, the guide says.

“Indigenous people earn their Eagle Feathers, and it is a symbol of high regard.”

And always ask permission before taking photos, as some parts of the event “are sacred and cannot be photographed,” including during the Flag,
Prayer and Honour Songs.
