The Toronto Blue Jays were unable to secure a sweep over the Miami Marlins this weekend, but they did make MLB history with one of their victories.

Saturday night was a stressful one for the Blue Jays. Despite holding a 4-3 lead in the ninth inning, they allowed the Marlins to come back and tie it up, sending the game to extra innings.

Toronto would subsequently grab back the lead in the 10th and 11th innings as well, with the Marlins coming back to tie each time. It wasn’t until the 12th inning that the Blue Jays finally found a way to hold onto a lead and win the game by a score of 7-6.

It turns out that the Jays actually made history with that stressful victory as they became the first team in the MLB modern era to blow separate leads in the ninth, 10th, and 11th innings and still find a way to get the win.

While the win can’t quite be considered a comeback victory since the Marlins never had a lead, it’s about as close to one as you can get. The Jays have been very comfortable playing in uncomfortable situations this season.

They sit tied for the MLB lead in comeback wins this season with 39 alongside the LA Dodgers. Three of those have come in the ninth inning, which is tied for fourth in the major leagues.

Toronto very nearly made it 40 comeback wins on Sunday, but could not find a way to get past the Marlins for a third time and wound up losing 5-3.

This is the type of adversity that should help the Jays as they enter the final stretch of the season. They currently sit atop the AL East standings with a 76-55 record and are four and a half games up on the second-place Boston Red Sox.

With 31 games left in the season, Toronto will need to continue finding ways to carve out these types of wins if they want to capture their first AL East division title since 2015.
