NEW YORK — Sophomore Dylan Gelber upset second-seeded Michela Moore of Dartmouth, 7-6 (5), 6-2, Saturday to reach the singles semifinals of the Ivy League Invitational Automatic Qualifier at Columbia’s Philip and Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center.
The field includes 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams from all eight Ivy League programs. The singles and doubles champions each earn the league’s automatic bid to the ITA Conference Masters Championships, Nov. 5-8 at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Ga. Gelber is two wins from that bid.
Against Moore, Gelber took the first set in a 7-5 tiebreak and then pulled away in the second, 6-2. Her quarterfinal win was her third straight-set victory of the weekend. On Friday she beat Columbia’s Amber Yin, 6-2, 6-1, and Penn’s Jo-Leen Saw, 6-4, 7-5.
In doubles, senior Michelle Ryndin and junior Sage Loudon, the third seeds, fell to Yale’s Erin Ha and Angela Chen, 8-5, in the quarterfinals.
The singles event uses a compass draw, so players who lose early continue in consolation brackets. In the West bracket’s round of 16, freshman Athena Orzechowski fell to Dartmouth’s Caroline Lemcke, 6-3, 6-4.
Gelber’s semifinal against Columbia’s Emily Baek will take place on Sunday. Baek advanced with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 win over Brown’s Sari Woo.
