NDP swept off Surrey’s map

Wha?

That was the look on Surrey New Democrats’ faces at the Grand Empire banquet hall in Newton as it dawned on them their leader, former premier David Eby, had just traded a majority government with two years left in power for a thumping Conservative majority government on Saturday night.

The NDP sustained an electoral erasing in Surrey.

“I’ll be offering my resignation as premier,” Eby told supporters a mere hour and a half after the polls closed.

New Democrat incumbents Surrey-Newton MLA Jessie Sunner, Surrey-Guildford MLA Garry Begg, Surrey-Fleetwood MLA Jagrup Brar and Surrey City Centre Amna Shah were not re-elected.

“I did everything possible I could do,” said Brar, who had served six terms in Surrey.

Sunner told the Now-Leader the plan now is for the NDP to rebuild, come back and form government once again.

Surrey voters are sending 10 Conservatives to Victoria, including Surrey-Panorama’s Bryan Tepper, Surrey-White Rock’s Trevor Halford, Surrey-Serpentine’s Jessy Sahota, Surrey North’s Mandeep Dhaliwal, Surrey-South’s Megan Knight, Surrey-Guildford’s Garry Thind, Surrey-Newton’s Harj Dhaliwal, Surrey-City Centre’s Zeeshan Wahla, Surrey-Fleetwood’s Gary Purewal and Surrey-Cloverdale’s Nicholas Cartmell.

In the October 2024 provincial election the NDP lost major ground in Surrey after a night of tight races, with the Conservatives elected in six of 10 ridings with the NDP elected in the remaining four.

As it stood heading into that particular election campaign, NDP orange had been the dominant colour in Surrey, holding seven of Surrey’s existing nine ridings (one new riding – Surrey-Serpentine River – was created for the 2024 election).

In 2024, voters in Surrey City Centre elected Amna Shah (NDP); in Surrey-Cloverdale Elenore Sturko (Conservative) was elected; in Surrey-Fleetwood Jagrup Brar (NDP) was re-elected; in Surrey-Guildford Garry Begg (NDP) was re-elected; and in Surrey-Newton Jessie Sunner (NDP) was elected.

In Surrey North Mandeep Dhaliwal (Conservative) was elected; in Surrey-Panorama Bryan Tepper (Conservative) won and in Surrey-Serpentine Linda Hepner (Conservative) was elected.

In Surrey South Brent Chapman (Conservative) was elected as was Trevor Halford (Conservative) in Surrey-White Rock.
