Angel Reese and the Atlanta Dream find themselves down 3-2 in the WNBA Finals, and they believe the recent shift in officiating has a lot to do with their predicament.

At one point, the Dream looked to be comfortably en route to their first WNBA championship, having taken a 2-1 lead over the Golden State Valkyries.

However, the Dream lost their next two games consecutively and are now just one more loss away from having their WNBA Finals dream turn into a nightmare.

Angel Reese suggests referees ‘shifted’ against Atlanta Dream after Game 3

Speaking to reporters after their loss in Game 5 of the WNBA Finals, Angel Reese pointed out how frustrated she and her teammates have been with the unfair foul calls they’ve received

She suggested that the officials had been making calls in favour of the Valkyries, and that had been the case since Game 3, when the Dream took a 2-1 lead in the series.

Angel Reese on the officiating:

“I would definitely say last game…there was also a possession where Gabby pulled me on purpose and she was screaming foul foul, foul and they didn’t call it. So that definitely was frustrating for sure. And her team is saying it and they’re all… https://t.co/7SCzw3NAtT pic.twitter.com/pSuaC48jok

Reese said: “I would definitely say last game, for sure. There was also a possession where Gabby pulled me on purpose, and she was screaming, ‘foul, foul, foul,’ and they didn’t call it. So that definitely was frustrating for sure.

“And her team is saying it, and they’re all screaming foul, but the refs – I don’t know what’s going on – why they can’t hear it?

“And I know I have the mismatch, especially since we were talking about matchups. So when I do switch on the post, and I’m a lot stronger than the opponent, I should be able to turn, and they’re calling an offensive foul, but I’m getting pushed before that. So that is frustrating for sure.

“It definitely shifted when we went up 2-1. Things shifted, and I don’t know what happened, but it definitely took a big turn.”

While the officiating can be questioned by the players, Reese and her teammates must also take accountability for their poor performances.

Across the last two games, Reese’s numbers have been quite poor, as she has averaged just 7.5 points, 12.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 0.5 steals, and 1.5 blocks while shooting 20.0% from the field.

In fact, Reese has just made four of her last 20 field goal attempts in Games 4 and 5, showing how well the defensive schemes the Valkyries have used on her have worked.
