Carlos Prates has fired a warning shot towards Islam Makhachev after a recent post from Dominance MMA manager Ali Abdelaziz.
Prates was expecting to challenge Makhachev for the welterweight gold in the UFC 336 headliner on Jan. 30, 2027. While Prates will be competing for gold, it’ll be an interim title at stake. He’ll be facing Michael Morales while Makhachev will wait to return at some point after Ramadan.
Abdelaziz defended Makhachev in the midst of criticism for not accepting the late January date on his X page.
“If You’re a contender. Islam is the champion and maybe the greatest fighter of this generation. Talk less, because he’ll make you look bad. None of you add to his legacy. He fights for passion, love of the sport, and the fans.”
Prates fired back at Abdelaziz, vowing to put an end to Makhachev’s legendary run at the top of MMA.
”If he fights for passion , he would fight the number 1 contender in January . I will not add anything on his legacy , I will finish his legacy brother , and also , he will make me look great . Mark my words.”
Prates and Morales are two of the top contenders at 170 pounds, and many are anticipating a slugfest when they collide in Toronto. “The Nightmare” has put together a three-fight winning streak, scoring finishes over two former UFC champions in the process. Meanwhile, Morales is undefeated up to this point and his biggest win to date was against Sean Brady back in Nov. 2025.
