Brampton is preparing to honour Canada’s veterans with a series of Remembrance Day events, including a special parade marking 100 years of the Royal Canadian Legion.

The City of Brampton is partnering with Royal Canadian Legion Branches 15 and 609 to host commemorative services and activities leading up to Nov. 11, giving residents opportunities to recognize the sacrifices of veterans and active members of the Canadian Armed Forces.

This year’s observances carry added significance as the Royal Canadian Legion celebrates its centennial, alongside the 100th anniversary of Brampton’s Major William Dwight Sharpe Branch 15. The city’s main Remembrance Day ceremony will feature a special Freedom of the City Parade to recognize the Legion’s century of service to veterans and the community.

A parade and Service of Remembrance will take place on Sunday, Nov. 1, at 10:50 a.m. at Memorial Square in Chinguacousy Park, located at 9050 Bramalea Rd.

Residents can also attend a candlelight service on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 7:30 p.m. at the Veteran Statue in Gage Park, 45 Main St. S.

On Remembrance Day itself, Wednesday, Nov. 11, a sunrise service will take place at 7:55 a.m. at the main chapel of Meadowvale Cemetery, 7732 Mavis Rd.

The city’s main ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Cenotaph in Ken Whillans Square. The event will include the special Freedom of the City Parade commemorating the Legion’s 100th anniversary.

Brampton will also recognize Black Veterans Day on Nov. 7 and Indigenous Veterans Day on Nov. 8 during Veterans’ Week, which runs from Nov. 5 to 11. The observances recognize the contributions and sacrifices of Black and Indigenous veterans throughout Canada’s military history.

The city will continue its Veterans Banner Program, displaying the names and images of local veterans and active military members outside City Hall near Ken Whillans Square. Their banners will also appear in rotation on the Garden Square screen.

Residents planning to attend Remembrance Day events should note that most city offices, including City Hall, will be closed on Nov. 11.

Brampton Transit will operate on its regular weekday schedule, and veterans can ride for free on Remembrance Day by presenting a Brampton Transit Veteran Pass or an accepted form of military identification, such as medals, a beret, a uniform, a blazer or service papers.

City parks, trails and playgrounds will remain open, while Brampton Library branches will be closed for the day. Recreation facilities will operate under regular hours, with programs continuing as scheduled.
