A busy intersection in Mississauga’s east end will remain partially closed a while longer as work crews repair a watermain, project leaders said.

Peel Region public works officials said on Thursday the north side of the intersection at Burnhamthorpe Road East and Molly Avenue, just west of Cawthra Road, will remain closed until Nov. 4 as workers complete the repair job.

In an Oct. 29 update to residents and motorists, Peel Region said “the watermain repair has been complex and required moving other infrastructure to access the underground pipe. Thank you for your patience.”

The north part of the busy intersection was initially closed off the week of Oct. 19 so crews could repair the watermain. The work was expected to be completed and the intersection reopened by Oct. 26.

However, work crews encountered difficulty and subsequently pushed back the completion date by just over a week.

A MiWay bus stop (stop no. 1564) has been temporarily moved while workers finish the job.

Public works officials remind drivers and others in the area to be careful around the work site and obey construction crews.

A number of residents began asking the region earlier this week why the intersection hadn’t been completely reopened by Oct. 26.

Meanwhile, watermain and sanitary sewer work — including some major projects — continues at a number of locations across the city.

In Mississauga’s south end, ongoing construction has reduced a section of Lakeshore Road near the waterfront to one lane of vehicle traffic in each direction for at least the next month.

Peel Region officials said in their latest project update they’re reducing the number of lanes on the busy road between Jack Darling Memorial Park and Lorne Park Road through the end of November.

During the temporary lane reduction, crews will continue their work installing a new watermain and large sanitary sewer along Lakeshore Road between Jack Darling Memorial Park in the west and Elmwood Avenue in the east.

Workers are also putting in a new sanitary sewer on Wesley Avenue, from Park Street to Lakeshore Road West, and replacing a section of watermain between Ibar Way and Shawnmarr Road.

More lane reductions will take place in the area through summer 2028 as Peel Region completes the major infrastructure project, officials said.
