George draws inspiration from the rich artisanal traditions of his birthplace in India

The Art Gallery of Algoma is proud to present the first solo exhibition of local artist Gabriel George, called Timeless Blend: An Amalgamation of Cultures.

Public opening of the exhibition is on Friday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m.

Artist will be in attendance. The exhibition will run until Jan. 30, 2027.

The exhibition explores the connections between global folk traditions, contemporary technology, and the shared cultural patterns that bring communities together.

Based in Baawaating (Sault Ste. Marie), George draws inspiration from the rich artisanal traditions of his birthplace in Kerala, India, to examine the universal patterns, geometries, and colours found across cultures. Through an innovative combination of traditional materials, including yarn and wood, with industrial elements and reclaimed technological artifacts, his work bridges ancestral craft practices with the realities of an increasingly digital world.

George graduated with distinction from OCAD University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture and Art Installation. His interdisciplinary practice is informed by his background in cinematic art direction and his ongoing study of global folk cultures.

A recipient of the 2026 Ontario Arts Council Chalmers Professional Development Grant, George continues to develop large-scale public and gallery projects that encourage cross-cultural dialogue and celebrate the enduring significance of traditional art forms.

In addition to the exhibition opening, visitors will have opportunities to engage with the artist and explore his creative process through upcoming public programming:

The Artist Talk will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m.

Workshop with Gabriel George exploring yarn as art material will be on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2027, at 5:30 p.m.
