BOSTON – UAlbany men’s soccer junior defender Rodrigo Hermelo was named America East Defensive Player of the Week after the Great Danes’ 1-0 road win over UMBC on Friday, October 30.
Hermelo played all 90 minutes against the Retrievers, helping UAlbany record its seventh shutout of the season. The junior defender anchored a back line that has posted consecutive 1-0 shutout victories over No. 12 Vermont and UMBC
Hermelo has been a consistent presence on the back line throughout the season, playing the full 90 minutes in 11 of UAlbany’s 13 matches. He has logged 1,114 minutes, averaging nearly 86 minutes per appearance, while starting every game for the Great Danes. His durability and consistency have helped UAlbany rank third nationally with a .571 shutout percentage.
Hermelo’s defensive contributions have helped UAlbany improve to 9-4-1 overall and 4-2-0 in America East play. His steady presence along the back line has been instrumental in the Great Danes’ defensive success, helping the team clinch a Top 4 seed in the America East Championship while keeping its hopes of claiming the regular-season title alive.
This marks Hermelo’s first America East Defensive Player of the Week honor of his career.
UAlbany returns to action Tuesday, Nov. 3, as the Great Danes travel to Vestal, N.Y., to face Binghamton in their regular-season finale. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
