Montreal’s police department has dismissed seven officers in connection with racism and discrimination allegations.
The allegations entail “discriminatory and racist actions, as well as derogatory acts,” a Monday afternoon press release from the SPVM says.
It was not immediately clear whether the “administrative dismissals” are linked to ongoing investigations into alleged police misconduct. A press conference is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Last week, Radio-Canada reported allegations that a police officer at Station 39 in Montreal North erased video evidence of domestic violence from a victim’s phone after recognizing the perpetrator.
That station remains under investigation for alleged racist incidents, which this summer saw a 16-officer patrol unit disbanded and four officers suspended. La Presse and Radio-Canada report that officers in the unit cut hair off Black men to keep as trophies.
In October, Montreal police suspended two officers from a downtown station, including one who reportedly urinated on unhoused people.
This report will be updated.
