An Amherstview woman has filed a report with Belleville Police and the Coroner’s office after her grandmother’s life was taken using Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID), a process during which a physician or nurse practitioner either administers a substance that causes death directly or prescribes/provides a substance for the patient to self-administer.
Brigitte Kranendonk claims her 83-year-old grandmother, Brigitte Stegemann, did not have the mental capacity to give proper consent for MAID while living at The Pearl long-term care home in Belleville, a place she had resided for the past two years.
Stegemann was administered MAID and passed away on July 10. An investigation is under way into her death, according to an email from the Office of the Chief Coroner.
